A Simple Guide to Registering Your Drone & Becoming a Licensed Drone Pilot
Whether you’re flying a drone for weddings, real estate, agriculture, inspections or recreational purposes, all drone operations in Zimbabwe are regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) under the Civil Aviation (Remotely Piloted Aircraft) Regulations (SI 271 of 2018).
Step One: Purchase your Drone
Ensure your drone has:
✓ A serial number
✓ Proof of purchase
✓ Manufacturer details
Keep your purchase receipt, as you’ll need it during registration.
Step Two: Register Your Drone with CAAZ
very drone operated in Zimbabwe must be registered with CAAZ before it is flown.
To register your Drone with the CAAZ you will need:
- Completed Drone Registration Form (CA Form 520)
- Copy of your National ID or Passport
- Proof of ownership (purchase receipt)
- Details of your drone (make, model and serial number)
Step 3: Complete Remote Pilot Licence (RPL) Training
If you intend to fly a drone in Zimbabwe, you are required to obtain a Remote Pilot Licence (RPL) through a CAAZ-approved training organisation. This includes commercial, corporate, recreational and private operations. Precision Aerial is a registered & approved training school.

- Navigation & Flight Planning
- Drone Operations
- Risk Management
- Practical Flight Training
Step 4: Pass Your Theory & Practical Exams
Your training provider will prepare you for:
✓ Written Theory Examination
✓ Practical Flight Assessment
✓ Skills Test with a designated examiner
Once successfully completed, your documentation is submitted to CAAZ for licence processing.
Step 5: Receive Your Remote Pilot Licence (RPL)
After approval by CAAZ, you’ll receive your Remote Pilot Licence, allowing you to legally operate drones within the privileges of your licence and in accordance with Zimbabwe’s aviation regulations.
