One of the biggest misconceptions people have is believing that drone regulations only apply to large commercial companies. In reality, if you’re using a drone to provide a service or earn money—whether filming a wedding, creating real estate videos, inspecting a roof or producing social media content—you must understand and comply with Zimbabwe’s drone regulations.
In Zimbabwe, drones are regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) under the Civil Aviation (Remotely Piloted Aircraft) Regulations, which set out the legal requirements for operating remotely piloted aircraft.
Commercial drone operations generally require the appropriate approvals, and pilots must hold a valid Remote Pilot Licence (RPL) for the category of drone they are operating. Simply owning a drone does not automatically give someone permission to conduct commercial flights.
This applies to many everyday businesses, including:
- Wedding videographers
- Real estate photographers
- Construction companies
- Surveyors
- Mining companies
- Agricultural service providers
- Marketing agencies
- Event organisers
Operating without the correct approvals can expose both the pilot and their client to legal and insurance risks.
There are also operational rules covering where drones may fly, altitude limits, flying near airports, operating at night and maintaining safe distances from people and property. Some operations require additional approvals depending on the location or type of mission being carried out.
For businesses hiring drone service providers, compliance should be one of the first questions you ask.
Is the pilot licensed?
Is the operation insured?
Do they have the appropriate permissions for the work?
Choosing a compliant drone operator protects your business, your reputation and the safety of everyone involved.
As Zimbabwe’s commercial drone industry continues to grow, professional standards will become even more important. Businesses that invest in qualified, licensed drone operators will not only remain compliant but will also benefit from safer operations, higher quality results and greater confidence from their clients.
Flying a drone isn’t just about capturing incredible images – it’s about doing it safely, responsibly and legally.
